A major multi-agency meeting is being held in Grantown-on-Spey to address the devastating summer wildfires in the Highlands — the worst in living memory. Fires at Carrbridge and Dava destroyed over 11,000 hectares of land in the Cairngorms, killing thousands of animals and damaging the rural economy.

The Scottish Government summit, involving the Fire and Rescue Service, NatureScot, and land management groups, will explore ways to improve prevention and response. Officials highlighted climate change, human activity, and dry conditions as key factors behind the rise in wildfires. Debate continues over the role of muirburn, with new licensing rules now delayed until 2026.

Fire chiefs and ministers say improved training, equipment, and collaboration will be essential to protect Scotland’s landscapes and communities from future wildfire threats.
