Wild Stories & the making of the film
Wild Stories, created in partnership with environmental charity Wildscreen, invited young filmmakers across the UK to slow down, look closer and discover the wildlife, habitats and natural wonders found in their local communities.
Participants were challenged to create a short film responding to the theme Wild Stories. Entries could take the form of documentaries, dramas, animations, experimental films or other creative approaches, provided they explored nature, biodiversity, conservation, wildlife or the relationship between people and the environment. Filmmakers were also asked to consider responsible wildlife filmmaking practices, ensuring that nature was observed respectfully and left undisturbed.
The Progress of Man was selected from entries submitted from across the UK and impressed judges with their creativity, storytelling ability and response to the theme.

Watch the Winning Film
The Progress of Man, created by Uilleam, was chosen as this year’s winning entry. The short film is about a boy who is struggling with life and work. The boy meets a man in his dream who teaches him that nature is not so far off from his current state. The Progress of Man | Videos & Movies on Vimeo
Before you watch, a little more on the film
How does your film connect with the theme?
I use the stress of a boy as a metaphor for the stress nature is under and how, with just a little break, nature can recover from the harm we have done.
Experience making the film
I made this film by myself without help from adults or friends. I wrote the script in an hour, then ran up to the woods behind my house to begin filming. I go walking in the woods all the time, nature has a deep connection with a person, whether they recognise it or not. I see my town grow every year and see more of my forest cut down every year. I would be very sad to see no trees one day.
